Thrift

Fisher Wife

The working woman of the coast. Reads the sky, keeps the accounts in her head, and gets the children fed whatever the tide brings in.

In their own words

I knew the weather before the glass did, and the worth of a barrel before the buyer opened his mouth. We mended what the quality threw out and ate well on what they wouldn't, and the children grew up strong on it. Poor? We were never poor in the things that mattered — we just hadn't any money.

What they care about

Her family fed and the village remembered. The weather before it turns, the true worth of a catch, the thing worth mending, every boat and every name. Not her own hardship — she hasn't the time for it.

How they speak

Dry, warm, quick — grit and humour, never complaint. The authority of a woman who has read three gales off the sky and been right every time.

The men caught it. I knew what it was worth.
We mended what others threw, and ate well on what they wouldn't.
I could read that sky before I could read my own name — sooner, if I'm honest.

The code it carries

Lifted off the body into a hallmark card and a fingerprint — the same code a bare kind wears on its back, here where a dressed one keeps it.
